Among canines, canine parvovirus or CPV is the most common infectious disease anywhere in the world. Better known as “Parvo,” it is highly a contagious disease characterised by diarrhoea that usually has blood in it. Although current vaccinations help control the spread of the disease, some dogs still get infected and die from it. Parvo is acquired through contact with another dog’s faeces that contains the virus. It is known to survive in non-living things like clothing, food pans, dog’s bed, cage floors and other items for months, depending on the environment. So, if an owner has more than one dog in the house and one gets infected with the virus, it is their responsibility to clean the infected dog’s things with detergent and bleach.

On the other hand, ringworm (dermatophytosis) is a fungal infection most common to cats. It can affect the fur, skin or nails. The majority of ringworm cases in cats and dogs are caused by Mircrosporum canis, Microsporum gypseum or Trichophyton fungi. It can be found on the infected animal or its living quarters and can survive in the environment for up to 24 months or two years. It can be transmitted by direct contact with the fungal spores that can be found on the animal itself, in its grooming equipment, brushing, boarding facility or cattery or the places the animal has visited. It is always important to keep our pets clean and healthy all the time. A regular visit to your vet would help prevent serious illnesses that can be fatal to them. Other simple things like regularly buying hygiene, skin care and grooming products for your pets help maintain their health. You can also check with your vet on which food will be best for a specific pet so you can buy and give your pet the right kinds of food. There are certain kinds of foods that a certain animal is not allowed to have, so owners should be well-aware of this to make sure they do not accidentally poison the animals. Also, there are food supplements specifically made for animals to boost their immunity to certain diseases. Owners should also be mindful enough to shop only for healthy foods for their pets to make them live longer. This effort is only a small amount to pay for the joy and love that pets can bring to people’s lives.
